ETIQUETTE:
The Code of Jamming
1) Play at a volume that allows you to hear everyone else clearly.
2) Obey the instructions of the Facilitator - it's for the greater good.
3) If there are people waiting to play, rotate out every 20 minutes.
4) Be in tune: Tune silently or (at the very least) quickly. And often.
5) Talk to each other "off mic" for best communication in a small room.
6) If you're not sure what to play, drop out or play very quietly.
7) Give everyone a fair say in song selection.
8) Don't noodle while others are trying to talk about what to play.
9) Help out new and inexperienced players. Make them feel welcome.
10) Stop playing and start packing 3-5 minutes before time is up.
11) Be willing
to expand your horizons.
The Code of Rehearsing
1) Play at a volume that allows you to hear everyone else clearly.
2) Arrive on time or call your bandmates if you're running late.
3) Do your homework. Rehearsal is not the place to learn songs.
4) Agree upon a modest rehearsal agenda - preferably in advance.
5) Stop playing and start packing 3-5 minutes before your time is up.
6) Prior to gigs, rehearse
exactly
as if you were on stage performing.
7) Rehearse as regularly as possible.
The Code of Gigging
1) Play at a volume that allows you to hear everyone else clearly.
2) Be ready to add or cut songs from your set as necessary.
3) Be prepared to break strings, picks, and sticks.
4) Make friends with the soundperson. Ask for adjustments politely.
5) Get on and off the stage as quickly as possible.
6) Stick around for your comrades' sets, and they'll likely do the same.
7) Promote your gigs via email (everyone!), and keep a Mailing List.
8) Look like a pro: Don't use a music stand.
9) Keep in mind that you aren't just playing - you're performing.
10) Minimize "down time" between songs.
11) If you want to gig again, obey all the instructions of the Soundperson, Promoter, and Club Manager. You probably need them more than they need you.
12) Change at least half your set for each gig to keep your fans interested.
13) Build a MySpace website: It's free, and you'll have a place to announce gigs, sign people up for your Mailing List, and see/hear your band.
