WHO BECOMES A JAM MEMBER?
1) people who had bands in high school or college - until marriage, career, and family took priority;
2) those who've been strumming their guitar only for their cat, or singing only in the shower;
3) pros and semi-pros who want to occasionally play just for fun - not for work.
4) the songwriter who'd like to hear what things would sound like with a band, but doesn't want
    (or can't afford) to pay professional musicians;
5) the karaoke singer who'd like to play longer, more often, and at different venues;
6) those looking to live out their rockstar fantasies (pop, funk, jazz, soul, and country too);
7)
anyone who'd like to feel the sense of camaraderie and achievement that comes from being in a band;
8)
people who want to experience the joy that only comes from making music with real people in real time;

THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
:

The Jam is a membership-driven organization. A monthly ($29.95 + tax by recurring credit card only) or annual ($299.95 + tax) membership at the Jam entitles you to a package of benefits, such as:

1)  use of "house" instruments and effects at the Jam and at Jam events;
2)  matchmaking services to help you find like-minded musicians;
3)  the opportunity to perform at Jam showcases and other events;
4)  reduced-price open jam sessions (33-40% discount);
5)  free admission to all Jam events (including The Jammy Awards);
6)  VIP discount at Guitar Center Manhattan;
7)  10% off voice lessons from Liz Caplan Vocal Studios;
8)  the pride of belonging to a supportive community that believes in the transformational power of music, and helps spread the joy of music-making to disadvantaged kids and the larger community.

Very few members take advantage of all these items - in fact, most are happy with one or two. Like a NYC deli, we try to be many things for many different kinds of people. And your needs may well change: You might start off jamming a few times a month, but perhaps next year you'll join a band. Then you'll need some new gear for shows, or maybe you start writing some songs. Or the band breaks up and you go back to jamming, or looking for new projects. None of this happens overnight, but all the while you're hanging out, attending shows, meeting people, making friends, and doing something you love - making music.

Of course, it's going to take a little effort on your part, but (like joining a gym) becoming a Jam member is a great way to kickstart the process. Most people, however, begin the journey with a visit and an open jam session. See the space, meet some of the regulars, and soak in the vibe. In fact, you can attend as many jam sessions as you'd like without being a member. Join if and when it feels right for you.

NETWORKING:
Few things make us happier than finding playing situations for our members. Whether it's a casual twice-monthly jazz get-together or a  full-blown Kiss tribute (in makeup), we'll do our best to make it happen, through postings on our website and in our weekly email Bulletin, database searches, and good old-fashioned personal matchmaking. By attending our showcase events, you'll meet lots of interesting people and become part of the scene. Members NEVER pay to to attend our gigs.

GIGGING:
For about half our members, nothing beats the thrill of playing live. And that thrill is enhanced when someone else rents the van, procures the backline gear, does all the heavy lifting, takes care of the soundman and doorpeople, keeps everything on schedule, and provides all the amenities (guitar stands, extra cables, a spare amp) that make gigging as worry-free as humanly possible - so that you're free to concentrate on having fun.

OUTREACH:
The Jam NYC proudly supports a number of events and organizations that promote recreational music-making
(The Human Karaoke Experience), restore funding to public school arts programs (Taste of Tribeca Festival), and put instruments in the hands of schoolkids who couldn't otherwise afford them (Little Kids Rock). We believe that if we can get kids to pick up guitars instead of bad habits, the world will
be a better place. And we put this belief into action.
